History of Estates Theater

Geschichte des Ständetheaters

The opening of Estates Theater, built by Count Franz Anton Nostitz-Rieneck and originally named after him, took place in 1783 with the premiere of Lessing's tragedy Emilia Galotti.

It owes its present name to the Czech Estates, who bought the theater in 1798 and renamed it the Royal Estates Theater.

To this day, the building, built in the classicist style, has been preserved almost completely in its original state.

The chandelier, which was hung during the last complete renovation in 1983 - 1991, is a copy of the original chandelier from 1874, which is still partly supplied with gas. It weighs 800 kilograms and has 148 light bulbs.

Inseparably connected with the history of Estates Theater is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who conducted "Figaro's Wedding" here in January 1787. On October 29, 1787, Estates Theater hosted the world premiere of the opera "Don Giovanni," which Mozart dedicated to the people of Prague. In the following years other operas by Mozart were performed.

With almost 700 seats, Estates Theater is today one of the stages of the National Theater and is used for ballet and drama performances, with the operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart forming a program focus.
