Taxis in Prague: Important Info, Fares & Tips

There are many different taxi companies in Prague. Unfortunately, taxi drivers still have a very bad reputation and not entirely without reason. 

Many try to charge a higher price, do not adhere to the official fees, drive a longer route, or manipulate the taximeter during the ride so that it runs faster and a higher price is displayed.

Important Recommendations

• Tourist Points: Never get into a taxi near tourist spots. Taxi drivers often wait there to rip off unsuspecting tourists. Even Prague residents do not get into taxis here. Rather, use the well-developed local transport network.
• Ordering a Taxi: You can either order a taxi by phone or app, go to a taxi stand, or hail a taxi on the side of the road. When the taxi is free, the taxi sign on top of the car is illuminated.

If possible, order a vehicle via taxi apps, for example with Uber.

If you order a taxi by phone, let the reception desk at your hotel help you.

Hailing a Taxi on the Side of the Road 

• License: If you hail a taxi on the road - which you should not do if possible - make absolutely sure that it is a licensed vehicle. The yellow light on the roof must be installed in all cases and the word TAXI must be visible in black letters. The company name, license number and prices should be visible on both front doors.
• Taximeter: Make absolutely sure that the taximeter is switched on.
• Price: Ask for the approximate price of the route as soon as you board.

Payment

Payment is made by taximeter. In the Czech Republic, taxi fares are set by the authorities of cities or counties. The taxi fares for Prague were last set in February 2020 and published in the official tariff ordinance.

It is binding for all taxis and taxi companies within the compulsory driving area and may not be exceeded or undercut.

This is ensured with officially calibrated taximeters installed in the taxis.

Payment is usually cash, however some taxis accept credit cards. If you use cashless payment, an identification document must be shown at the driver's request.

The passenger is entitled to a receipt. This receipt must be issued to the passenger from the printer of the taximeter.

Language

Most taxi drivers speak no or very little English. If you are lucky, you will come across a driver who knows English.

Destination Address

Due to possible communication difficulties, it is recommended to write the destination address on a piece of paper and show it to the driver.

Specifying a major landmark, such as a landmark near the desired destination, is very helpful, as is specifying the neighborhood.

Fares

• Basic Fee: The basic fee is 60 Czech crowns (approx. 2.40 euros), the price per kilometer is 36 Czech crowns (approx. 1.45 euros).
• Night Fare: There is no night tariff in Prague, the same prices apply 24 hours a day.
• Standing and Waiting Times: For standing and waiting time, 7 Czech crowns per minute (approx. 0.28 euros) will be charged.
• Short Distance: Short distance costs 60 Czech crowns (approx. 2.40 Euro)

Electric Taxis

In the center of Prague, the basic fee for rides in electric taxis are 70 Czech crowns (about 2.80 euros), the price per kilometer is 39 Czech crowns (about 1.55 euros), and the short distance costs is 70 Czech crowns.

Taxi Color

• Yellow Taxis: Most taxis are yellow, have a yellow light on the roof with the word TAXI in black letters. The company name, license number, and prices should be visible on both front doors.
• White Taxis: Taxi Praha are white taxis with taximeters. They operate under the name TickTack. The company offers taxi service with guaranteed tariff prices. The company can be reached by phone at +420 220 414 414 or by mail at info@taxi14007.cz.

Taxi to Václav Havel Airport

• Taxi: A taxi from the city center to Václav Havel Airport will cost around 700 Czech crowns. It is charged by taximeter, there are no additional fees.

Obligation to Transport

There is an obligation to transport, each passenger must be driven to any desired destination, as long as it is within the city limits. The taxi driver is obliged to drive the shortest and therefore the cheapest route, unless another route has been agreed.

No-Smoking Rule

There is a general no-smoking rule for drivers and passengers in taxis.

Tipping

Tipping is not a must, but is expected. A 5 - 10% tip is within reason.

In these taxis you can usually pay without cash.

Be sure to use a taxi app to order a taxi and do not flag down a taxi on the side of the road.

Taxi Reservations

Of course, a taxi can also be pre-ordered, either by phone or by mobile app. Your hotel will be happy to help you order a taxi.

Uber

The company UBER has its headquarters in San Francisco, USA. It is a US service company that arranges transportation services online in many cities around the world.

Once you have downloaded the app on your phone, you can use the UBER services. When you order an UBER, you will be told the price for the route you want. Payment is made by credit card, Eurocard, PayPal, or with Google Play.

We strongly recommend all visitors to use the services of UBER instead of calling a taxi.

Complaint Hotline
