History of the Mucha Museum<\/h2>\n

The Mucha Museum is located in the baroque Kaunitz Palace in the center of Prague, which was rebuilt several times during the 19th century. Since June 13, 1998, it has served as a permanent exhibition space for the work of the painter and Art Nouveau artist, Alfons Mucha.In the Mucha Museum, about 300 of Mucha’s works are exhibited on an area of 500 square meters. Mucha is considered to be one of the most outstanding representatives of the Art Nouveau style, .<\/p>\n

Born on July 24, 1860 in Moravia, Alfons Mucha initially worked as an office clerk. After a few years, however, he received various commissions for stage paintings and thus began his artistic career.<\/p>\n

He became famous practically overnight when he painted Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous Western actress at the turn of the century, as “Gismonda” in 1894. The “Lady of the Camellias” poster, designed in 1896, is often considered one of the early highlights of Art Nouveau poster art.<\/p>\n

Between 1911 and 1928, he created a monumental work on the history of Slavic peoples, the “Slavic Epic”.<\/p>\n

He also created designs for stock and bond documents, postage stamps, banknotes, and insurance policies. The pictures he took as an amateur photographer served in part as models for his graphic works.<\/p>\n

In 1901, Mucha became a knight and in 1934 an officer of the French Legion of Honor. Mucha was a member of the League of Freemasons.<\/p>\n

Financially independent, he lived with his wife and two children in a castle north of Prague. After the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, he was imprisoned and died shortly after his release from pneumonia on July 14, 1939, in Prague.<\/p>\n
